Board of Examiners
The Board of Examiners is responsible for guaranteeing the quality of the bachelor's and master's programmes of the Faculty of Archaeology.
The Board of Examiners is independent and its tasks are amongst others appointing examiners, approval of study programmes, dealing with complaints about exams, and fraud. Below is information on submitting requests to the Board of Examiners.
Change of 2e focus MA
Criteria: study load of 10ec, level 400 or higher, the total choice of components should cover all end qualifications of the MA-programme
Exemptions
Criteria (OER 4.9): documented, successfully completed component similar in content and level and/or demonstrated skills and knowledge based on relevant work or professional experience
Extension thesis deadline (extension regarding the 15 June or 15 December deadlines for access to the graduation ceremony in September respectively February)
Criteria: only for documented extenuating circumstances (“overmacht”), maximum 2 weeks
Access to retake with use of first opportunity
Criteria (R&R 4.11): documented extenuating circumstances for not using the first opportunity
Extra retake
Criteria (OER 4.1.7 & R&R 4.11.6): only as last course for the MA/MSc when all other courses have been completed successfully and the final thesis has been submitted; in case an exam is doubtful according to the Board of Examiners or an external expert.
Complaint about an exam
In case of a complaint about an exam, the Board of Examiners will start an independent inquiry and if necessary ask for external advice. If a member of the Board of Examiners is involved, the member is excluded for the inquiry.
Approval of a minor outside of Leiden University
Criteria: At least 10 EC with level 300. You can request permission by filling out this form and sending it to the Board of Examiners.
Approval of an elective outside of your own curriculum or Leiden University
Criteria: proper argumentation must be made and space in the course for an extra student is required, which is to be determined by the course administrator before an assessment can be made by the Board of Examiners.

- Mention your name, student number and programme (MA / MSc / RMA)
- Mention clearly the subject (type of request, see above)
- Argue your request clear and to the point and provide the necessary documentation
- Send your request by email to examencommissie@arch.leidenuniv.nl
Your request is registered and you receive a confirmation with a case number (FdA.exc.XX-XXX). Your request is considered by the Board of Examiners. Within a period of 30 workdays (6 weeks) after registration you will be informed about the decision. The Board of Examiners convenes each month around the 20th.
The decisions are based on the Course and Examination Regulations for MA or RMA (including the e-study-guide) and the Rules and Regulations of the Board of Examiners. Personal circumstances and proportionality are taken into account. If you do not agree with a decision, you can lodge an appeal at the Examination Appeals Board of Leiden University.
