Leiden Law PhD Community (LLPC)
Mission statement
The Leiden Law PhD Community (LLPC) comprises all internal and external PhD candidates based at Leiden Law School. By organising social events, we aim to create a welcoming community for PhD candidates and encourage them to connect with other PhD candidates across Leiden Law School. PhD candidates are automatically part of the community and can join in with all of the organised events. The LLPC is an open, inclusive environment and aims to include international candidates.
The LLPC consists of the following bodies:
The PhD Committee
The PhD Committee is the LLPC’s organisational body. The committee is run by a rotating group of PhD candidates who are committed to creating a dynamic, social and friendly community for all PhD candidates.
The PhD Committee organises both monthly and annual events that promote community building and interdisciplinary dialogue. By organising these events, it aims to create a balance between social activities and informative events. They include an annual dinner at the start of the academic year (to welcome all new PhD candidates), an annual gala (usually with a theme, live music or a DJ), monthly events such as PhD drinks, ice skating, our Valentine’s Law & Love pub quiz, barbecues, boat trips and informal informative meetings for internationals on topics related to Dutch society (e.g. King’s Day, election night).
The PhD Committee also acts as a link between the PhD community and the PhD Representative at Leiden Law School. It meets regularly with the PhD Representative to discuss PhD-related issues. Occasionally, it organises career-related events in collaboration with the PhD Representative and the Graduate School of Legal Studies.
The PhD Committee for the 2024-2025 academic year comprises: Emre Acar (Public International Law), Joris van de Riet (Jurisprudence), Eva Polman (Jurisprudence), Joep Schoenmakers (Constitutional and administrative law), Öykü Kurtpinar (Air and Space Law), Maria-Lucia Rebrean (eLaw), Larissa de Lima Almeida (Economics) and Mohammed Raiz Shaffique (eLaw). .
If you have any questions or ideas, or you’re interested in joining the PhD Committee, please contact Emre Acar (e.acar@law.leidenuniv.nl) or Joep Schoenmakers (j.c.f.n.schoenmakers@law.leidenuniv.nl).
PhD Representative
The PhD Representative represents the LLPC’s interests in all matters relating to the PhD trajectory and beyond, attends monthly meetings of Leiden Law School’s Research Board (OZB) and maintains regular contact with the various departments to gather input on PhD-related issues.
The current PhD Representative is Tim Lubbers (Legal History).
If you have any questions, please contact Tim Lubbers.
WhatsApp group
The LLPC has an informal WhatsApp group for PhD candidates, which tells PhD candidates about upcoming events organised by the PhD Committee. PhD candidates can also use it to organise and promote their own events.
To join this WhatsApp group, please contact Emre Acar (e.acar@law.leidenuniv.nl) or Joep Schoenmakers (j.c.f.n.schoenmakers@law.leidenuniv.nl).
